{"id":531,"date":"2013-07-25T02:37:27","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T02:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bandishaum.wordpress.com\/?p=531"},"modified":"2013-07-25T02:37:27","modified_gmt":"2013-07-25T02:37:27","slug":"latest-garden-news-meeting-minutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bandischaum.org\/?p=531","title":{"rendered":"Latest Garden News, meeting minutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><b>BS July 23, 2013 Agenda and Minutes<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>GTECH and Grow Pittsburgh have joined forces to create an awesome tour of community greening projects.\u00a0 Scheduled for Saturday, August 10, there will be two bicycle route options and one bus tour route (with three departure times throughout the afternoon). Grow Pittsburgh, who has helped us out a great deal, is featuring the Community Garden at Bandi Schaum Field on the long bike tour route.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of the middle stops, so riders will probably be there between 11:30am and 1:30pm.\u00a0 They will be in groups of ten, and will stop for 0-15 minutes at each garden.\u00a0 GP expects 75 riders to sign up for the long ride.\u00a0 This will be taking place rain or shine. There are no obligations for your garden to become a stop except to make sure that your water is turned on and available for riders to fill up their water bottles.\u00a0 However, this is a great opportunity to show off your garden, fundraise, and build support for the project.\u00a0 They need gardeners on hand to welcome riders, and\/or give tours, provide free produce samples, sell some item as a fundraiser, offer a hands-on activity, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0<i>Several gardeners in attendance volunteered.\u00a0 Volunteers will also be solicited via the blog.\u00a0 We will make a welcome sign.\u00a0 We will also solicit anecdotes about gardening at Bandi Shaum.\u00a0 Do you have a story to tell?\u00a0 Contact Jessica McNally at <\/i><a href=\"mailto:jessica@growpittsburgh.org\"><i>jessica@growpittsburgh.org<\/i><\/a><i> to share your story about gardening at Bandi Shaum.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Volunteers needed to make a welcome sign.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Schedule harvest party: <i>Date chosen was September 28<sup>th<\/sup> at 5 pm.\u00a0 Can we get electricity by then?\u00a0 If not, music will be acoustic.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Painting the shed: <i>Grow Pittsburgh purchased new paint.\u00a0 Rick McLain has dodged the raindrops to try to finish; others have volunteered, so should be done by the end of the month.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Bulletin Board: <i>Still awaiting word from City Arts Commission for approval of bulletin board design submitted by Grow Pittsburgh.\u00a0 In the meantime, a bulletin board will be hung on the interior of the shed door.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Solidify the decision making process (i.e. if someone wants to build something or grow something in public areas, how do they get approval? How is steering committee chosen?\u00a0 How are changes made to agreement?): <i>Gardeners were asked to outline their suggestions and post them to the blog (<\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/bandishaum.wordpress.com\/\"><i>http:\/\/bandishaum.wordpress.com<\/i><\/a><i>).\u00a0 Members will vote on their choice at next general meeting.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Update on bees: See agenda for details of Burgh Bees presentation: <i>It was decided by the membership in attendance that a vote on accepting bees should be unanimous, given allergies.\u00a0 Since attending gardeners voted against it, we will revisit the topic in a year or two, when Burgh Bees will be invited to answer questions.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Grilling: <i>The city has no objection, but the grills cannot be permanent, i.e. brick or stone.\u00a0 <\/i><\/li>\n<li>Tree tending: <i>Cem at the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation is monitoring the drainage to see if we will be able to plant more fruit trees.\u00a0 The next round, the herbs, will arrive soon.\u00a0 The fruit tree tenders need to be diligent about removing weeds.\u00a0 One of the berry bushes is planted too deep and will need to be raised.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>When to call the City: <i>Gardeners need to attempt to resolve conflicts by talking directly to their fellow gardener about the issues.\u00a0 If the issues cannot be resolved, they should be referred to the steering committee, who will contact the parties involved.\u00a0 Issues that involve violations of the garden agreement will be dealt with by the Department of Public Works.\u00a0 Do not call the city for minor issues such as grass cutting, weeds, or water; we do not want to aggravate the very people who are assisting us.\u00a0 Consuming alcohol on the premises is not illegal per se, but drunken, disorderly behavior and\/or underage drinking should be referred to the Police, not the city.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>Empty plots: <i>The steering committee refers the empty plots to the city as soon as they become aware that the plots are abandoned.\u00a0 It is up to the city to notify the gardeners that they no longer have the plot and choose from the waiting list. Gardners may not plant on or erect structures on others\u2019 plots, even if they appear to be abandoned.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>Composting:\u00a0 <i>Those gardeners who signed up to compost should be turning the compost pile on a regular basis.\u00a0 Please do not put anything in the compost pile that is larger than the palm of your hand.\u00a0 Fruit and vegetables should be cut up first.\u00a0 Please refer to the Bandi Shaum blog for directions on what can and cannot be composted.\u00a0 This group should meet soon to discuss schedule and process; please contact each other.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>Weeds: <i>We will be moving the weeds location shortly, as it impedes the city\u2019s ability to mow the grass.\u00a0 Look for signs that direct you to the new weeds location.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>Green N\u2019at Garden Tour, August 18<sup>th<\/sup>:\u00a0 <i>Green N\u2019At, a South Side public gardening and beautification organization, will hold its second Garden Tour on August 18<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 More than a dozen South Side gardens will be featured.\u00a0 Posters will be hung at neighborhood businesses that indicate where tickets can be purchased.\u00a0 Green N\u2019At is looking for volunteers to facilitate the tour at the homeowners\u2019 gardens.\u00a0 Volunteers need only work for two hours and will receive a free ticket to the tour.\u00a0 Email Carla Garfield at <\/i><a href=\"mailto:cgarfield829@gmail.com\"><i>cgarfield829@gmail.com<\/i><\/a><i> to volunteer or to purchase tickets.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>Food bank plans: <i>The Food Bank Committee will place a white milk crate under the current bulletin board table.\u00a0 Donations will be gratefully accepted in this basket on Mondays and Thursdays and delivered to local food banks.\u00a0 Please weigh your produce and record it in the binder before you donate it.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>New items:\n<ul>\n<li><i>The food scale is in the shed and will soon be hung on the outside of the shed.\u00a0 Please weigh all of the produce you harvest and record the weight in the binder.\u00a0 This information helps us to obtain grants and other garden aid.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>We hope to soon have a gas lawn mower donated to Bandi Shaum, which will be stored in the shed.\u00a0 Anyone know how to maintain it?<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i><i>Many gardeners are interested in a fundraiser to help raise funds for garden equipment and social events.\u00a0 Please attend the next meeting or post on the blog to share your ideas.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><i>At the meeting, it was suggested that:<\/i>\n<ul>\n<li><i><\/i><i>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/i><i>A mediator be added to the list of garden job<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Shelves and a peg board and hooks be added to the shed\u2019s interior.\u00a0 Does anyone have materials\/expertise to donate?<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>\u00a0<\/i><i>Is the bat box supposed to be in the sun?\u00a0 If not, can it be moved?<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>\u00a0<\/i><i>Next year, since the waiting list is so long, each address should only be allowed one plot.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i><i>Gardeners need to use the rain barrels!\u00a0 The rain water is better for the plants and for the environment than city water.\u00a0 A hose and nozzle will be added to the rain barrels so that gardeners won\u2019t have so much difficulty turning the water on and off.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i><i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><i>Gardeners who want to offer free gardening classes\/workshops need only advertise them on the blog, they don\u2019t need to register.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><i>Since we just had a meeting, our next meeting doesn\u2019t need to be as soon as August 7<sup>th<\/sup>, as originally planned.\u00a0 A Doodle message will be sent out to see what date works best for our next meeting.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Who is running the facebook pages?\u00a0<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\" align=\"center\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><b>BS July 23, 2013 Agenda and Minutes<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>GTECH and Grow Pittsburgh have joined forces to create an awesome tour of community greening projects.\u00a0 Scheduled for Saturday, August 10, there will be two bicycle route options and one bus tour route (with three departure times throughout the afternoon).
